What Should You Look For In A New PA System

By Eric M Odessean

Is your business, venue or church looking into getting a new PA system? Is the one that you presently have a bit outdated or has your business or congregation grown over the years and folks are starting to talk about the possibility of updating or expanding your current audio visual equipment but you're not sure about what direction you should head? While a new system might be needed, you want to make an educated decision and take the many variables into consideration before presenting the proposal to the powers that be. Price, options as well as capabilities all come into play while wanting to be careful about the price tag, of course.

Price can often become a sticking point since it is entirely possible to go overboard when it comes to the many options and levels of quality. Quality should be your primary concern since replacing the old sound system with one that is under-powered or inherently problematic can be embarrassing. After all, how bad would you and your organization look if you had a major malfunction during a performance or gathering such as a wedding or an important meeting or service? Even a new system that performs poorly can leave people wishing that you hadn't gone to a new system and all of your work and the expenditure would have been for nothing.

A newer sound system is almost invisible and it can only enhance the listener's experience while an old crackling PA system detracts from what your audience came to see and hear. New headsets that are almost invisible and which utilize wireless technology help both the audience and the speaker to forget that sound is being amplified. Say goodbye to old school lapel mics and a speaker being chained to the front of the room or the pulpit, so to speak.

When looking into a new PA system for your business, venue or church, take some time and learn about all the options that you have. Think of all the different scenarios where your going to be using the system in addition to worship services. Maybe during the holidays you have a choir or the children put on plays. Perhaps you're thinking of adding instruments to the worship service at some point.

Sizing your sound system to your present venue is all well and good but looking to the future and knowing that there's a pretty good chance that your organization will be growing is also an important thought to keep in mind. Start out small with a good quality system that can be scaled, expanded, used in different capabilities as well as adding different functionality to it as time goes on is important. Have fun and embrace the technology that is available to you these days as you research your new sound system for your venue or organization.
