Progressive Philadelphia Art Galleries

By Helen Georgette

Visitors who are sure that Philadelphia's art scene climaxes with Robert Indiana's Love sculpture and the Rocky statue will be happy to know that the City of Brotherly Love is rife with great art destinations. American history might be foremost in most people's minds when thinking on the subject of Philly, but the culture and art that flows thru Philadelphia is quite as wonderful as the Liberty Bell or Independence Hall. A vibrant local artistic community prospers in Philly and the vast number of Philadelphia art galleries available makes their work easy to enjoy

First Friday in the City

Seeded all throughout the city - from the outdoor mosaics of Philly's Magic Gardens to the Picasso's hanging in the Museum of Art - there are galleries in Philadelphia that cater to genres from eclectic to traditional and conventional. Lots of the galleries are situated in the Old Town district and are open for viewing in the well-liked "First Friday".

Slingluff Gallery

Situated in Fishtown and owned by Jonathon Slingluff and his wife Leigh, the Slingluff's offer monthly exhibitions that will go from local street art to modern art from across the globe. This is proving to be one of the more popular Philadelphia art galleries due to the ever changing exhibits that appeal to introductory art fans as well as those with a more practiced eye.

Locks Gallery

Housed in a stately 3-story building in Philly's Washington Square, Locks Gallery enjoys a name as one of the most popular art galleries in Philadelphia. Utilising its influence in global art circles, the gallery has helped raise the profile of a few local artists such as Edna Andrade, Jane Irish and others.

The Clay Studio

Part of the Old Town gallery district, The Clay Studio was created to give new artists a place to display their creations and work. It has since developed into the best spot in Philadelphia to see and purchase unique arts. Together with the gallery and store, The Clay Studio also offers classes for those that want to make their own art.

Schmidt-Dean

For over 25 years Christopher Schmidt has been showing his art and that of others from his Chestnut Street gallery. A former "Best of Philly" winner, Schmidt exhibits a wide range of work includingpainting, photography and sculpture, mostly by local artists.

Biello Martin Studio

Michael Biello and Dan Martin, along with architectural designer Carlo Fiammenghi have grouped together to bring one of the most eclectic art spaces in the country to the city of Philadelphia. This Old Town studio/gallery inspires the salon atmosphere of Europe, where works of all mediums are on view.
